"Florecer" “Florecer” is the fifth in a body of large-scale installation works that I have coined “Peoplescapes.” These installations are based on my photographs of women in various cultural settings in and outside the United States. Each installation results in a conundrum asking the viewer to question the role that culture plays in defining gender and identity - given that the installations are not symbolic of domestic portrait settings. Indeed, cultural definitions for what it means to be female continue to evolve over time as we forever ask and answer: Who am I? What can I become? The photo I used to create “Florecer” is of the first all-female mariachi group, prepping for their performance outside a restaurant in San Antonio. Please see more details below.
